Day 11 - Hunting...
Day 11: Spent 3 hours on Facebook Marketplace and got nowhere. Finding deals is way harder than I thought. The frustration of hunting when nothing's working. Real talk.
Last week was super fun.
We had a product to sell (the boat), we had a solid plan, and we had offers coming in. I even thought it might make sense to quit school.
Plus, we ended the week with a WIN, the sale of the boat.
This week has been HARD. I don't have a product and I spent 3 hours looking at Facebook Marketplace today and I only got more confused.
The things some people are willing to give me to sell are going for "FREE" on Facebook Marketplace.
My only wins this week are things I didn't set out to do in Flip-n-Ricky:
- We've gotten 12 subscribers 🥳 (but, I'm not sure why my Teacher requires I write each day or why subscribers matter).
- We've got money to spend if we find the right product (thanks to my Grandpa and the sell of the boat).
- Someone reached out on our email address and said they might be willing to sponsor Flip-n-Ricky. Not sure what this means, yet.
The Confusion
I reached out to my Teacher today to ask what I'm missing.
Why is entrepreneurship so hard?
I thought once we sold the boat, it would be easy to find the next thing.
But it's not.
Every item I look at, I think:
- Is this worth my money?
- Can I actually sell it?
- What if I buy it and can't flip it?
- How do I know if I'm getting a good deal?
- Who's going to drive me to pick it up?
I found like 20 things that LOOKED good, but when I checked what they sell for, they weren't worth it.
What My Teacher Said
He told me something that I didn't expect.
"Ricky, hunting for deals IS the work.
The boat was easy because it fell in your lap.
Now you have to hunt."
He also said most flippers look at 100 items before they buy 1.
That means I'm not behind. I'm just learning what everyone else already learned.
But wowzer, it's super frustrating.
The "Other Ricky"
The "other Ricky" had a focus, I don't. Maybe I need to:
- Pick ONE category to focus on instead of looking at everything
- Set a rule: If I can't make $50 profit, I don't buy it
- Actually MESSAGE sellers on good deals instead of just looking
- Start small (look at $100 items and not cars priced at $3,000)
I need to take action because one small win could get me back on track...
Teacher's Take
- The Hunt Is the Business
Ricky's frustrated because he thought finding products would be easy after the boat sold. But here's the reality:
The boat was a gift. It fell in his lap. Grandpa asked him to sell it. There was no hunting required.
Most successful flippers spend hours every day searching, scrolling, messaging, and evaluating. They look at 50-100 items to find one good deal.
Ricky spent 3 hours today and felt like he wasted time. But he didn't. He was doing the actual work of being a flipper.
- The Wins He's Missing
Ricky said his "only wins" this week are subscribers and a potential sponsor.
Let me reframe that:
12 subscribers = 12 people willing to follow a 13-year-old's journey
That's not a small win. That's momentum
A potential sponsor = Someone sees value in what you're building
That's validation. Someone thinks Flip-n-Ricky is worth investing in, even though you're only on Day 11.
These aren't "only" wins. These are BIG wins that set up future success.
- What Ricky Needs to Do Next
- Pick a category - Stop looking at everything. Focus on one thing (sports equipment, electronics, furniture). Master that first.
- Set buying criteria - Don't buy anything unless it passes these tests:
- Can make at least $50 profit
- Can sell within 30 days
- Understand the product/market
- Take action - Message 10 sellers this week. Make offers. Learn from nos.
- Trust the process - The hunt IS the work. Embrace it.
Ricky's not behind. He's exactly where he should be on Day 11.
- Why Writing Matters
Ricky asked why I make him write every day and why subscribers matter.
Here's why:
Writing = Clarity
When you write about your day, you process what happened. You see patterns. You learn from mistakes. You document progress.
Today's post shows Ricky's frustration clearly.
Now we can address it.
Subscribers = Accountability + Opportunity
Those 12 people are watching. They're rooting for you. Some might send you deals. Some might buy from you. Some might share your story.
You're not just building a flipping business.
You're building an audience, a brand, a community.
That's worth way more than one flip.
Keep writing.
Keep showing up.
The hunting will pay off.
The Numbers - Day 11
Money Spent: $65.17
Money In: $4,000
Subscribers: 12 🥳 (up from 10!)
Potential Sponsor: 1 (in talks)
How I'm feeling: 4.5/10
(Frustrated. Confused. But not quitting.)
See ya tomorrow,
Ricky
