Day 8 - Planning Week 2
Made $4,000 selling the boat, then hit a wall. Should we quit or pivot? A 13-year-old's crisis moment and the purpose that changed everything. Day 8 of 365.
After church today, I went to lunch with my Teacher and he said I should use today to plan the rest of the week. What activities that I could actually do to get us closer to our goal, $1 million in less than a year.
Week 1 ended on a high note. We sold Grandpa's boat. We made $4,000. More than I ever imagined.
Entrepreneurship is really hard!
I don't know what to do.
I have no idea where to start.
I don't even know how to plan this week.
I just called my Teacher and asked if we should just split up the money and stop. We could each make some money and be happy.
He could hear the confusion and uncertainty in my voice.
He asked me a question:
"What is the Purpose of Flip-n-Ricky?"
Why did you start this business?
I told him I didn't know anymore. It's just not clear what we should do with the $4,000. It all started because Grandpa asked me to help him sell his boat.
My Current Thoughts:
- I don't really know what product(s) to buy next.
- I talked to several people last week who have simply asked me to "help them sell their stuff".
- I'm starting to meet others who are doing some similar things.
Other "Ricky's" who use Facebook Marketplace to sell their stuff. - I'm actually enjoying telling others about Flip-n-Ricky. It's fun telling the story.
My teacher suggested go back to why Flip-n-Ricky was formed (the Purpose):
to help others sell their stuff
It makes sense cause I talked to at least 4 people who needed help when I told them about Flip-n-Ricky.
Then, the idea came. What if we use "Flip-n-Ricky" to be the brand that helps others sell their stuff?
- We could help others sell their stuff and figure out how to split the profit
- We could use our proceeds to buy and sell our own stuff (when we find good deals)
- We could help other "Ricky's" learn how to build their own business.
It sounded perfect.
My goal this week is to talk to 5 people who have things they need sold and see how we can list them and get them sold.
Teacher's Take
- There are three key ingredients to building a successful business:
People + Purpose + Process - Ricky had lost a sense of the PURPOSE for Flip-n-Ricky. He was starting to fixate on the money and not the real goal: to help others.
- The key take away for us is to "Never Suffer Alone". Entrepreneurship and life can be lonely, but always know there are those out there who can help.
